Around 10km from Geyzing, the district headquarter of West Sikkim, Pelling is a small hill town in the lap of the Eastern Himalayan region. Elevated at a height of 2150m, Pelling gets covered in snow during winter, with summer being obviously quite pleasant. The monsoon brings quite heavy rain and autumn also returns to the summer-like weather.
The ruins of Rabdentse Palace, which is at a walking distance from Pelling, prove that the area was the former capital until 1814 AD. The King of Sikkim from Namgyal dynasty used to rule the state from here.
Pelling is situated around 115km from Gangtok, the state capital, and 135km from Siliguri, the nearest town with each and every facility of modern life. Shared jeeps and rental cars are regularly operated towards Pelling from Siliguri, Gangtok, Jorethang, Kalimpong, Namchi. The nearest Airport to this small hill town is Bagdogra Airport and the nearest railway stations are Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri.
